Pediatric Gastroenterology (GI) Lab
In the Pediatric Gastroenterology (GI) Lab at Children’s Health℠, we diagnose and treat all types of GI disorders, from the common to the complex. The team in the GI Lab includes pediatric gastroenterologists (doctors who specialize in GI disorders) supported by specially trained registered nurses and GI endoscopy technicians. We focus exclusively on caring for children of all ages and sizes, from newborns to young adults.
Together, the team performs minimally invasive endoscopy procedures to diagnose and treat diseases, often during the same procedure. Endoscopy uses a scope (long, flexible tube with a camera attached) to diagnose and treat GI disorders. During endoscopy, your child will have anesthesia (medicine to put them in a sleep-like state and feel no pain). Our doctors gently pass the scope through the mouth or rectum, and they don’t make any incisions (cuts).
Minimally invasive endoscopy helps your child avoid major surgery and have a faster recovery with less discomfort. With our team’s pediatric focus, we can perform complex, advanced procedures that aren’t usually available for children.

One-Day Clean-Out Instructions for Colonoscopy
For your child’s safety, follow these one-day clean-out instructions to get your child ready for their colonoscopy. If the instructions are not followed, your child’s procedure may be canceled. The goal of this one-day clean-out is to get your child’s poop (stool) to become a clear liquid.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call the GI clinic at 214-456-8000 and speak to a nurse.

Specialized expertise in pediatric GI care
At Children’s Health, your child receives care from a team with extensive experience in caring for children who have GI disorders. Our gastroenterologists, nurses and medical assistants have specialized training in pediatric care and understand the unique needs of children.
Some highlights of our team include:
Board-certified doctors: Our gastroenterologists are board-certified in both pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology. They also have additional years of training (after medical school) in children’s medical care and in GI disorders that affect children.
Specialized GI nurses: Our team of nurses focus on pediatric endoscopy for GI disorders, with specific training in that area. Our nurses work only in GI-related, pediatric endoscopy procedures — no other surgical specialties. That means your child receives the best possible care from a nursing team with years of dedicated experience.
Child Life specialists: These trained professionals are available to meet with your child at every stage of care. They help children understand what to expect with an endoscopic procedure and provide emotional support before and after procedures.
Through our expertise, we provide exceptional care for your child with a compassionate approach that puts you and your family at ease.
Advanced endoscopy procedures for children
Our pediatric gastroenterologists have extensive expertise in the most advanced endoscopy procedures for children. Some procedures include endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), balloon enteroscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Only a few doctors at a few centers in the country have the training to perform advanced endoscopy in children.
Our doctors also have the skills and training to perform these procedures on even the smallest infants, including premature babies and newborns. At other centers, children often have endoscopic procedures with GI teams who treat mostly adults. Each year, our team performs nearly 3,000 general and advanced endoscopy procedures for children. Learn more about these and other therapeutic endoscopy procedures we offer.
Personalized support to navigate the treatment process
The GI Lab team provides a comfortable experience for you and your child, helping you prepare for both inpatient and outpatient procedures. Our nurses and medical assistants are by your side throughout the process as we:
Explain what to expect before, during and after the procedure
Help you get the procedure approved by your health insurance plan
Give you the prep instructions for the procedure
Guide you through the day of the procedure, from the preparation, through the procedure and to the recovery
Follow up with you within two weeks after the procedure to check on your child’s recovery and ensure that you’ve received biopsy results, if your child had a biopsy during endoscopy
