Kids can get six to eight colds a year, and having the right cold and flu essentials on hand means faster relief and fewer late-night pharmacy runs. Michael Lee, M.D., Pediatrician with Children's Health℠ and Professor at UT Southwestern, shares what every parent should stock — and what to skip.
What are must-have items for parents during cold and flu season?
A reliable thermometer
Infrared forehead and digital oral thermometers are most accurate for checking fever in children. Rectal are most accurate for infants. Avoid ear and underarm options, which are less accurate.

2. Saline solution and nasal aspirator
Saline spray or mist loosens mucus. For babies and younger children, a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator can help clear congestion, which is especially important before sleep and feedings.
3. Fever-reducing medicine for children
Keep children’s acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin) at home. While they won’t treat the illness itself, they can help relieve fever and discomfort.
4. Sore throat remedies
Warm liquids, honey (for children over 1), and popsicles often work better than anything in the medicine cabinet.

5. Hand soap and disinfecting supplies
Frequent handwashing is one of the most effective ways to prevent cold and flu in kids. Using disinfecting wipes or sprays on high-touch surfaces is also important for keeping your home healthy.
Other helpful remedies for cough and congestion in kids
Cool-mist humidifier: Helps with dry air and congestion when placed near sleeping area
Vapor rub: Applying to chest may reduce nighttime cough in children 2+
Afrin nasal spray: Can help severe congestion in children 6+, but only use for 2-3 nights
Which cold and flu products should you avoid with kids?
If your child is under 6, it's important to avoid giving them over-the-counter cough and cold medicines.
"Cold medicines attempt to treat the symptoms of a cold," says Dr. Lee. "Unfortunately, these medications are not effective in young children and should not be given to children under the age of 6 years, as they could also cause side effects."
Dr. Lee also cautions against unregulated supplements like elderberry, whose safety and effectiveness are not established.
How to help prevent cold and flu in children
Wash hands often, disinfect surfaces, prioritize sleep and nutrition – and make sure everyone in your family over 6 months gets an annual flu shot. Call your pediatrician to schedule one, or find a vaccine location near you.
